How It All Began: A Writer Was Born
I began writing as an outlet in middle school. The more I read and the less I could find relatable books, what I wrote evolved into the real ranch stories that highlight the beauty and heartbreak of ranching as I have and do live it.
About Sequoyah Branham
I’m a born, bred, and raised West Texas girl. These days, my husband and I split our time between West Texas and Northern New Mexico, where we’re living life with cattle, horses, dogs — and plenty of fresh pasture air.
I was raised ranching with my dad and uncles. Now, I’m blessed to do it alongside my husband. When I’m not at the writing desk, I’m likely:
teaching young horses or young dogs to work
reading (duh)
enjoying a long walk through a quiet pasture
obsessively reheating my coffee because I’m a huge coffee gal ☕🐄
What Fills My Cup
The thing that fills my cup most?
Riding through the pasture and talking to God.
Big skies. Cattle up ahead. My husband off in the distance. Those are the moments that refresh my soul and make me eager to sit back down and write some more.
Any day working cattle with loved ones — that spark of inspiration? That’s everything.
About In the Company of Cows
This is a story very close to my heart — inspired by my uncle and the impact he had on me.
In the Company of Cows follows Nora Kelly, a woman who wants nothing more than to tend heifers in her corner of the Texas desert — until drought forces her to rethink everything. When she calls on her real‑estate agent uncle for help, she discovers she’s getting more than just a lease.
I wrote this story to show how powerful it can be when someone believes in you — just like my uncle did for me.
Favorite Characters?
Choosing one feels impossible! Nora was such a joy to write — her emotions, her grit, her hope.
But if I had to choose?
Uncle Ian — based on my own uncle — probably takes the crown. He’s tough (because ranch life demands it), but his tender heart shines for Nora in ways that meant a lot to craft. I loved bringing his personality and legacy to life — and even more in the sequel, In Between Pastures.
What I Hope Readers Take Away
If readers walk away from In the Company of Cows with courage and grit in their belly, I’ve done my job.
Whether you’re facing social anxiety, loss of a dream, or something else heavy — I hope this story reminds you:

A Scripture That’s Carried Me
Romans 8:28 — a verse I return to time and again.
“…And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him...”
From jobs that didn’t work out to dreams that were delayed — God has shown me this truth again and again. If those things hadn’t unfolded the way they did, I might never have met my husband — or landed exactly where I’m meant to be today.
